Bo Luc Lac, or Vietnamese Shaking Beef, is a quick and flavorful stir-fry featuring tender, juicy beef cubes marinated and seared to perfection. This dish is a delightful fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French influences, perfect for a family-friendly meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb beef sirloin or ribeye, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp fish sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 1 tbsp minced shallots
- 1 tbsp cooking oil (for marinade)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced cucumber
- For the sauce:
- 2 tbsp Maggi seasoning sauce (or soy sauce)
- 1 tbsp white wine (or water)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
- 1
In a bowl, combine the beef cubes with soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, sugar, black pepper, minced garlic, minced shallots, and 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 5 minutes while you prepare the vegetables.
- 2
Thinly slice the red onion, tomatoes, and cucumber.
- 3
In a small bowl, whisk together the Maggi seasoning sauce (or soy sauce), white wine (or water), sugar, and cornstarch (if using) for the sauce. Set aside.
- 4
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a wok or large skillet over high heat until shimmering.
- 5
Add the marinated beef in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Sear the beef for about 1-2 minutes per side until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. You may need to do this in batches.
- 6
Push the beef to one side of the pan. Add the sliced red onions to the other side and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until slightly softened.
- 7
Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables. Toss everything together quickly for about 30 seconds until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the beef.
- 8
Serve immediately, garnished with sliced tomatoes and cucumbers.

Pro Tips
- •For maximum tenderness, use a good quality cut of beef like sirloin or ribeye and cut against the grain.
- •Ensure your wok or skillet is very hot before adding the beef to achieve a good sear and prevent it from steaming.
- •Do not overcrowd the pan when searing the beef; cook in batches if necessary to maintain high heat.
- •Taste and adjust seasoning of the sauce before adding it to the pan.
- •For a quicker prep, you can buy pre-minced garlic and shallots.
Variations
- •Add other vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli florets, or snap peas along with the red onions.
- •For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the marinade or stir-fry.
- •Serve over steamed white rice or with a side of crusty French bread for dipping in the sauce.
- •Substitute the white wine in the sauce with mirin for a slightly sweeter flavor profile.
